Looking for Gas & Heating Engineers

Enquiry:

We have a 125-litre Megaflo unvented mains pressure water heater/cylinder that is now 13 years old. Despite raising the thermostat setting to maximum, for some months now the water hasn’t been as hot as before (eg when taking a shower; there’s never enough hot water to have a proper bath) and by early evening there was often little or no hot water coming through the taps (eg for washing up after dinner). We therefore called in a local plumber, recommended by a friend, to assess the problem. The plumber drained the tank and found that a) the heating element was badly scaled, so he replaced that, and b) a layer of scale had also built up in the bottom of the tank, so used a suction machine to hoover out as much of this as he could. He also fitted a new anti-scale unit on the pipework exterior to the tank. But within a fortnight it was clear the water was no warmer than before and, moreover, the water pressure/power of the shower was definitely weaker. [NB: up to now our water’s been heated by E7 at night, along with two storage heaters that have been here since the flats were built in 1993. However, we’re having the storage heaters replaced on Tuesday this week (4th May) by Fischer radiators, at which point our E7 tariff will end and the hot water cylinder will be reconnected to the immersion socket linked to a new 24-hour tariff. So I’m now worried that, if the cylinder isn’t working efficiently, we’ll end up paying for it constantly trying to re-heat the tank without us getting effective hot water in return]. I therefore decided to cut our losses and re-contacted the plumber to say I wanted to revert to my original wish – to remove the current cylinder and replace it with a new one, trusting that this would ensure no scale and an efficient system for at least several years to come. Unfortunately, despite having paid him promptly for his work to date, from this point the plumber failed to respond to all my efforts to contact him. I feel badly let down by him (and wonder if he even had the required G3 certification that would have enabled him to install an unvented cylinder). So that’s where I am at present. I hope you’ll be able to arrange an initial visit soon to confirm the cause(s) of our current problems and either be able to remedy them without the need for a new, identical cylinder, or to quote for the cost of installing one if you’re sure that will resolve everything.
